I wrote a whole long entry and now it's vanished! Boo.
Basically, I am interested by this petition (US) from the International Center for Technology Assessment, and pbacked by Center for Food Safety, Beyond Pesticides, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, ETC Group, Center for Environmental Health, Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, Clean Production Action, Food and Water Watch, the Loka Institute, the Center for Study of Responsive Law, and Consumers Union, for the EPA to regulate nano-silver as a pesticide. It's used on a whole heap of consumer products such as cosmetics, clothes, and electronics.
Thing is, nano-silver is also used medicinally and has been for some time, because it has potent antibacterial and antiviral properties (including HIV). It's used in some wound dressings, and you can buy it as a health tonic, and people have apparently found it beneficial for treating colds, sinus infections, etc. In fact, I was alerted to this petition by a natural health group.
It seems quite complicated, and like there are all sorts of private interests one way or another.
