Hooooo-eeeee.

I just had my first ever driving lesson with a proper instructor. It lasted two hours, and I am exhausted. I drove us out into the countryside, then back through the centre of town, through some little windy residential areas, three point turns, LOTS of turning, U-turns at busy junctions, changing lanes on a busy road, speedbumps, the woiks. Not the freeway, but as I don't have to be able to drive on the freeway to pass my test I'm going to try and avoid that. The freeway is a terrifying place even as a passenger.

Now to finally have breakfast.

*flop*

congratulations :) did you enjoy it?

I was terrified of going on the motorway and avoided it for well over a year after passing my test. Then I was forced to, and I've got to say it's a lot less scary than the winding country lanes, as at least the idiots who want to travel at 120mph can overtake you!

mind you, I don't know what multi-lane driving is like over in the states...

I wouldn't say I enjoyed it, more just relieved that I wasn't already in a crumpled bloody heap. Particularly nerve-wracking having huuuuuuge trucks up on your tail at 55mph, yeeeesh. Multi-lane driving here is terrifying because everyone just goes zip-zip-zip from one side to the other, occasionally making up lanes if there isn't one to their fancy. Nono once I get my license I will not be lining up to drive, it's just to have it.

It is useful though. Going away for my first trip driving in the car was fantastic, especially doing stuff like camping or something which is a pain to do by train. Just the freedom to go where you want to when you want to.

I can sympathise about the huge trucks though, they always seem to come right up behind you - I'm sure they do it on purpose.

I only started to enjoy driving once I'd passed my test, I guess the feeling that yes, I could actually do it. Now I don't have to think so much about changing gear and the mechanics of what I'm doing with my feet, it becomes automatic and you find the main thing is watching what everybody else on the road is doing....

I might still have a very handy book about driving, would you like it? (was thinking of sending it but realised I can give it to you on the 23rd! whee!)
