Jun. 27th, 2003 02:06 pmHello everybody.
Today was our first proper field outing for class, and we first went to Davenport Overlook, where we saw a bunch of cormorants, some brown pelicans, some gulls, and three guillemots. And we spent three quarters of an hour writing about what they were doing which was, for example, stretching their wings, flying into the water, and panting. The high point was when we saw a flock of pelicans fly by, the second bird from the front being a cormorant.
Then we went to Rancho del Oso, where we saw a Virginia rail chick (which is apparently quite rare in Santa Cruz), a turkey vulture, a family of quails, several swifts and swallows, a red-tailed hawk and some scrub jays. All very exciting. Now I have to think about where I'm going to do my personal observations. I am thinking the park around the corner from me would be good, except that it's often pretty crowded. But there are redwoods just off it so maybe if I go a bit into that I'll find something to study. Eh, who knows?
Last night I went out with my housemates. They said they were going out, left, and then came back in and asked if I wanted to go too. So we went to their friend's house and then we all went to West Cliff and sat and watched the waves, and then we went to Natural Bridges park which is at the end of that, and I played with the waves for a bit. Then we had Thai food and peanut sauce was eaten and I was satisfied. I suspect I have a little too little in common with my housemates for us to really bond properly. And only being here for a month only makes it more difficult. I doubt I will hear from them again when I leave, and I probably won't contact them either. It will be interesting to see if things pan out differently, though.
OK, I have been on this computer for far too long so I will stop writing crap and go.
Mau.
